ABC News is reporting, Former Presidential candidate John Edwards admits to an affair with a female video journalist who was chronicling his campaign in 2006.  All this as his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, is fighting an incurable cancer.  Before the admission, John Edwards was perceived as the dedicated family man who was standing by his wife and running for President.

Another twist to the story, John Edwards denies he fathered a baby girl with the woman in February 2008.  Edwards claims the timing is off.  An Edward’s campaign staffer says he is the child’s biological father.  Reports indicate the space for the fathers name on the child’s birth certificate is blank.

Supermarket tabloid, The National Enquirer has been carrying the story since October 2007.  In the past, Edwards denied the claims calling it “trash!”  The National Enquirer admits paying story sources for some of the articles content.  Just last month, The National Enquirer reported Edwards met his mistress and the child in a Los Angeles hotel, not long after the birth.  Edwards reportedly told ABC news he does not love the woman.

What strikes you most about this story?  And how do you feel about Edwards after his admission?

How many times have you cheered a little leaguer who unexpectedly connected with a ball and began a breathless dash to first base?  We have watched with awe basketballs hitting nothing but net from athletes resembling birds in flight.  We have watched in disbelief as children in the name of gymnastics contort their bodies and roll around polls. And, on occasion, haven’t you wished that you could gain that fish like swim technique your neighbor’s son showed off at the local swim meet?  Those are just a few examples of possilbe future Olympians right in our neighborhoods.  Baltimore, Maryland, like many communities, saw several young athletes realize Olympic dreams such as: Olympic Gymnast Dominique Dawes, Olympic Swimmer, Michael Phelps, and Olympic hoopster, Carmello Anthony.  Both Phelps and Anthony are currently competing in Bejing, China.  During this three weeks of Olympic Games, 600 American athletes will be competing for the gold.

But, is politics cutting into the fun of the games?  Just days before President Bush’s attendance at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies and Games, he ratified the International Convention Against Doping in Sport.  The president contends it is a valuable tool in protecting the integrity of international sport and the health of athletes.  His statement  comes days after African-American track star Marion Jones was sentenced to six months in prison for lying to federal prosecutors about her use of performance enhancing drugs. since her admission she has been stripped of her medals. Meanwhile, the ratification brings together the international community and the United States to jointly develop a strategy to anti-doping control and enforcement in international competition.

Also hanging overhead, the issue of China’s human rights records and questions about why President Bush did not forgo the opening ceremonies.  President Bush has said it is about supporting the athletes.  With that, he is the first United States President to attend the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in another country.

What is the purpose of the Olympic Games, the athletes,  the Olympic Games or the politics of it all  What say you?
