April Ryan: About The Presidency in Black and White

cover_largeThe Presidency in Black and White gives readers a factual and compelling behind-the-scenes look at the inner-workings of race relations as it relates to the White House.

Each chapter of the manuscript contains interviews with important figures who have been involved in race relations, have been advisors to the White House, or have covered the White House.  These interviews were conducted solely for the book and some of the more notable figures quoted include such people as: President Obama, President Bill Clinton, First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, CEO and Sr. Pastor of the Potters House T.D. Jakes, legendary singer/song writer Stevie Wonder, Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Clinton Press Secretary Mike McCurry, former Clinton Press Secretary Joe Lockhart, nationally syndicated radio morning show host Tom Joyner, former Dean of the White House Press Corps Helen Thomas, Ambassador Andrew Young, Rainbow Coalition President Jesse Jackson, former Chair of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission Mary Frances Barry, White House historian Martha Joynt Kumar, Congressman James Clyburn, musician Fonzworth Bentley, music executive and CEO of KWL Enterprises Kevin Liles, founder and President of the Black Farmers Association John Boyd, broadcaster Roland Martin, radio host Armstrong Williams, actor Wendell Pierce, former Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Shirley Sherrod, broadcaster Tavis Smiley, Governor Doug Wilder, former Reagan and Bush press secretary Marlin Fitzwater, and others.

The White House has asked us not to share President Obama’s responses until the book is published since they anticipate his responses making news – and others have embargoed their interviews until publication, too.  The book concludes with a presidential report card on how each administration did on race issues.

April Ryan has a unique perch in that she is the only black female reporter covering urban issues from the White House – a position she has held since the Clinton era. April is a frequent speaker on the topics of the White House, Presidency, Race, and Politics.

I thought you were terrific on C-SPAN today! Really enjoyed listening to you and felt like you handled all the callers questions and comments very diplomatically . Amazed at the number of callers from Michigan and the difference in perspective. Again, enjoyed the show!
Ordered your new book after listening to you, and really looking forward to reading it.
