Eight years ago the NAACP was one the first organizations to make the public aware of the disaster in New Orleans’s 9th Ward after the levy break following Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans area NAACP branches reported back to the National Headquarters and its then President Bruce Gordon of many blacks who were left to be rescued after water filled houses to the rafters forcing the occupants to the roof or to other means of survival or to their deaths
