2015 Open Enrollment Kicks Off
On Background from a White House Official:
The second Healthcare.gov open enrollment period begins tomorrow, Saturday, November 15 and runs through February 15, 2015, where consumers can renew, shop, and enroll in quality, affordable coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces for the 2015 plan year.
There are 77 new health insurance issuers selling health care plans in the Marketplaces in 2015, up 25% from last year. In addition to reaching out to the uninsured, the Administration is focused on reaching the 7.1 million people already in the Marketplace to encourage them to update their application to get the most financial help possible and shop for the plan that best meets their needs. If current enrollees don’t take action by December 15, 2014, most will be automatically reenrolled in their current plan starting January 1, 2015. While we are making sure existing consumers get the most for their money, we continue to reach those Americans who remain uninsured.
Over 10 million uninsured adults have gotten covered through the Marketplace, Medicaid, and other sources since the start of Open Enrollment 2014, with the number of uninsured adults dropping by 26%. But millions more uninsured Americans are eligible to sign up, and we are ramping up our outreach starting tomorrow to help get more people covered in 2015.
Outreach Efforts Ramp Up
Last Friday, the White House hosted a call with President Obama, Secretary Burwell, and Valerie Jarrett, with over 6,700 participants, one of the largest calls the White House has ever hosted. Participants included volunteers, organizers, and local organizations on the ground working to educate and enroll individuals in the Marketplace during this upcoming open enrollment period beginning Saturday November 15th. The individuals that participated serve a wide variety of constituencies; rural, suburban, and urban communities; and nearly all 50 states.
Secretary Burwell to travel to OH, VA, TX, FL
On Tuesday, Secretary Burwell held a Google hangout with Latino bloggers, and conducted TV interviews with Univision and Telemundo which has aired throughout the week. On Thursday, HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell traveled to Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio to promote the upcoming open enrollment period with Ohioans, community leaders, and local partner organizations. Today, Secretary Burwell did regional TV interviews in Chicago, El Paso, San Antonio, Atlanta, and Chicago, as well as Telemundo in Atlanta and San Antonio to discuss the open enrollment launch and promote the Latino Enrollment Summits that are taking place on Saturday. Marketplace CEO Kevin Counihan did radio interviews into local radio markets across the country today, including Tucson, Portland, Denver, Kansas City, Cleveland, Salt Lake City, and Baltimore to promote open enrollment. Next week, Secretary Burwell will continue to promote open enrollment across the country with events in Tampa, Miami and Houston.
VP, First Lady, Cabinet Fan Out
Today, First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary Burwell will hold two organizing calls; one with young leaders who are organizing young adults to sign up for coverage, and another with doctors, nurses, and other health care providers from across the country to thank them for their help and encourage them to help as many people as possible sign up for 2015. Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett will be making calls to regional leads to thank them for their enrollment efforts.
On Wednesday, in Houston, Vice President Biden met with local health care workers and officials to thank them for their hard work preparing for the upcoming Affordable Care Act enrollment period. Also on Wednesday, OPM Director Archuleta was in Texas where she participated in an ACA enrollment kickoff event in San Antonio, and joined an NAACP/Young Invincibles enrollment kickoff event in Houston. On Wednesday, Labor Secretary Perez visited Ohio, where he participated in a Day-in-the-Life event where he met with a couple who previously worked for the Cleveland Clinic before both falling ill, losing their jobs, and subsequently their employer-sponsored insurance; they sold their home and wedding rings to cover the bills. However, the couple was able to obtain health coverage because Ohio expanded Medicaid coverage. Today, Secretary Vilsack is attending an ACA enrollment kickoff event at a community health center in Kansas City.
On Saturday, the President will discuss the start of ACA open enrollment in his weekly radio and TV address, and Secretary Burwell will visit an enrollment event at the Greater Prince William Community Health Center in Manassas, Virginia and meet with enrollment assistors and Virginians who are enrolling and re-enrolling in health coverage. This is one of over 200 enrollment events and summits taking place across the country this weekend, including at churches, community colleges, shopping malls, festivals, and other community events.
The White House will continue to share the stories of people who have gained coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces, and in states that have expanded Medicaid, and benefited from consumer protections in the law. We jump started this series by sharing the story of Russ and Linda Dickson in Georgetown, Texas, who just marked their one year anniversary of becoming small business owners after the promise of coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces gave them the freedom and security they needed to become entrepreneurs last fall.
